West Africa Project Fair

A Project of Rotary International Districts in West Africa.(Districts 9101, 9102, 9110, 9125 and 9140)
Project fairs is a growing phenomenom in the Rotary calendar. The primary aims are to promote World Peace and Understanding through friendships, and using the friendships thus created to collaborate on projects that make meaning impact in the local communities of the concerned region.
The West Africa project fair is one of ten or so similar activities that take place in different regions of the Rotary world.
Endorsed by the Reach out to Africa (ROTA) initiative of Rotary International, the first edition of The West Africa project fair was held in Accra, Ghana in 2005.
This year the 11th West Africa Project fair is taking place in the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
In West Africa there are over 10,000 Rotarians in 15 countries that are grouped into 5 districts. The fairs are held in Rotation in different cities of the sub region hosting at least 60 Rotary clubs, International partners from The United States, Europe and other parts of the world as well as Rotarians from the West African Rotary clubs.
The West Africa Project Fair (WAPF) is a two day event, where West Africa Rotary clubs offer humanitarian projects for consideration and funding. Each West African Rotary club occupies a fair booth, decorates it to draw attention to their offering, and provides well documented project proposals consistent with the requirements of The Rotary Foundation Global Grant funding requirements. International partners visit the project fair at their own expense, consider, select and take the proposals away, to provide funding by their clubs and or Districts, either alone, or through Global Grants. The process leads to development of international partnerships that: result in implementation of humanitarian projects in West Africa, establishment of long lasting relationships and promotion of international understanding, goodwill and peace.
In addition to the activities above, everyone updates their knowledge about The Rotary Foundation at the seminar sessions.
More interestingly, there are opportunities for tourism to local sites of interest, participation in polio immunization activities thus contributing to our initiative to END POLIO NOW. International partners also get a chance for "Hands on" participation in the projects of Rotary clubs in the hosting communites. What a life changing experience!

Project Fair History

When the WAPF was initiated in 2004, it was agreed that the event would be held annually, and rotated between the 15 West African countries in Districts 9101, 9102, 9110, 9125 and 9140. This was intended to afford each host country the opportunity to utilize the event for the improvement of Rotary's public image, and to extend fellowship to visiting Rotarians, both West African and International.

The first WAPF, held in Accra, Ghana in November 2005, attracted 50 West African clubs that displayed over 200 projects, valued at $6.0m. The second WAPF was also held in Ghana in November 2006, and since then Project Fairs have been held in Abuja,Nigeria in 2007, Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire in 2008, Cotonou, Benin in November 2009, and again in Accra, Ghana in November 2010. Dakar, Senegal was chosen to host the 2011 Project Fair, Lagos Nigeria in October 2012, Lomé Togo October 2013. The 2014 edition which was planned for Monrovia LIBERIA November 2014 was cancelled on health grounds. The 2015 edition was held in Abidjan, Cote d’ Ivoire. The 2016 edition has recently closed successfully in Port Harcourt, Nigeria paving the way for the 2017 fair to take place in Accra, Ghana.

The 12th West Africa Project Fair, 2017 in Accra, Ghana, brings together Rotarians from 6 West African Rotary International Districts and International partners from USA and Europe who have been very supportive in the growth of Rotary in Africa. It is expected that no less than 50 West Africa Rotary Clubs will exhibit over 200 projects proposals.
The 12th WAPF 2017 will take place from October 4, 2017, to October 11, 2017 at the LA-PALM ROYAL BEACH HOTEL, ACCRA, and the GHANA INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR CENTRE (LA, ACCRA).
We are indeed privileged that we have an opportunity to serve humanity through Rotary. We have a common platform where Rotarians from 6 Districts (D9101, D9102, D9110, D9125, D9141 and D9142) can come together with friends from Rotary Clubs in the USA, Canada and Europe to work for the enhancement of lives in our communities.
This 2017 WAPF is a very remarkable event in that apart from our usual international partners from the USA, Canada and Europe, we have among us special participants from East Africa Rotary Clubs to exhibit various humanitarian projects. Together we will display numerous humanitarian projects categorized in the six Areas of Focus that will ensure sustainability and be beneficial to our communities.
As the Chair, and on behalf of the Host Organizing Committee for the 12th WEST AFRICA PROJECT FAIR, I take the opportunity to welcome all Rotarians and friends from East and West Africa and in particular, our International partners from the United States of America, Canada and Europe not forgetting the host District Governor of D9102, DG Ari Toubo Ibrahim to Accra, the capital of Ghana.
I feel that we can further the cause of Rotary in the world by unifying our resources and direct them through our humanitarian projects which need our immediate attention and make Rotary more VISIBLE in our communities.
My dear Family of Rotary let us enjoy our stay in Accra in a spirit that is ever friendly and ever fair.
